Reliable Quality Water Supplies for a Sustainable Economy

Managing water in Alberta is challenging as water serves many purposes. Water is required for economic development. Water enhances the way we live by providing things like recreational opportunities. Water is also fundamental for the preservation of the environment.

In recent years Alberta’s economic and population growth has increased the pressure on water resources and the environment. To serve the needs of Albertans, water management must be responsive and relevant. It is important that water management allows the people of Alberta to meet current and future water requirements.

The Water for Life action plan identifies specific initiatives to be undertaken between 2009 and 2019 to support the goal of reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy. This includes work in the areas of:

  • Adapting water management to the effects of climate change
  • Creating a mandatory water use reporting system
  • Water allocation
