Water Conservation Objectives in Watersheds

The Government of Alberta is in the process of establishing water conservation objectives for the major watersheds in the province. Water conservation objectives aid in planning and development within a watershed, and establish water management principles that assist in preserving healthy aquatic ecosystems.

The South Saskatchewan River Basin

The Government of Alberta has established an approved water management plan for the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB).

As part of the overall management plan for the SSRB, water conservation objectives have been set for the Bow, Old Man, Red Deer and South Saskatchewan sub-basins.

Alberta Environment and Parks has prepared a number of studies of the SSRB specific to the aquatic environment. These include aquatic and riparian condition assessment; instream flow needs determinations; impacts on water quality; and water quality monitoring.
