Coalbed Methane Science Panel Review

Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) (formerly Alberta Environment) mandated a committee of expert scientists to review the Baseline Water Testing standard. The panel completed their evaluation and summarized their recommendations in a report presented to the department.

The report contains 16 main recommendations and three suggestions for long-term consideration. In summary, the panel is satisfied with the work done by AEP to date. The recommendations are mainly related to developing a consistent gas sampling and analysis procedure and an auditing process to ensure all tests completed within the Baseline Water Testing standard are reported back to AEP.

The department has already begun responding to the recommendations, including a review of the current gas sampling and analysis procedure. The learning from the review will lead to the development of a standard operating procedure for gas sampling and analysis. In addition, AEP and the Alberta Energy Regulator are exploring options for an auditing process.
