In 2013, the Government of Alberta consulted on proposed changes to Alberta’s recycling regulatory framework. The links below outline consultation details and results:

The proposed changes that were consulted on in 2013 were to:

  • Consolidate Alberta’s existing recycling regulations under one regulation
  • Designate household hazardous waste under an extended producer responsibility framework
  • Designate packaging and printed paper under an extended producer responsibility framework
  • Enable extended producer responsibility in regulation
  • Expand the electronics program to include small appliances, audio/visual equipment, telecommunications equipment and power tools
  • Expand the used oil materials recycling program to include other automotive containers
  • Remove specified maximum environmental fees from regulation while still ensuring consumer protection from excessive fees

Work on all proposed changes is ongoing and no decisions have been made at this time. Alberta Environment and Parks will provide updates here.
