Non-Certified Assistants

Certified applicators may supervise up to 6 assistants (any combination of non-certified and Authorized Assistants) at any one time. Non-certified assistants must be at least 16 years of age (18 years if applying Schedule 1 pesticides). No formal training and examination is required, however the non-certified assistants must be trained by the supervising certified applicator.

Training Checklist

The supervising certified applicator must complete a Training Checklist with the non-certified assistant:

  • at least yearly thereafter.

The Training Checklist is located at the back of the:

Supervision

Non-certified assistants must be supervised by a certified applicator. Certified applicators must provide the following supervision to non-certified assistants:

  • direct supervision for all applications specified in Section 5(11) of the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides. Direct supervision means the applicator is physically present at the application site throughout the entire application.
  • daily supervision for all other applications provided the application site, pesticide, application rate, equipment or calibration does not change. Daily supervision means the applicator must be physically present at least once per day at the application site to check the applications conducted by each assistant. The items to be checked are specified in Section 5(8) of the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides. If there is a change in the application site, pesticide, application rate, equipment or calibration, the applicator must provide another site visit.

The certified applicator is responsible for the non-certified assistants' pesticide related activities and must remain in radio or telephone contact with them at all times.
