Businesses offering (advertising) or providing a pesticide service in Alberta must hold a Pesticide Service Registrations. In addition, a Pesticide Service Registration is required when conducting an application:
- on rights-of-ways
- all public land (including all provincial and municipal public lands)
- forest management
Pesticide Service Registration holders must employ certified pesticide applicators to perform pesticide applications. Any person applying pesticides listed in Schedule 1, 2 or 3 (or Schedule 4 pesticides with certification statements on the label) in the following areas must also hold a pesticide applicator certificate:
- in rental dwellings
- on the grounds of a school, hospital, nursing home or daycare facility
- or in the common areas (indoor or outdoor) of multiple-family dwellings
In addition to applicator certification requirements, Pesticide Services must comply with legislation regarding pesticide storage, insurance, and other requirements to ensure public protection. Further information regarding the certification and service registration requirements is available in:
Anyone offering services through a third party contractor are required to ensure their contractor holds a valid and appropriate service registration and that they employ the appropriate class of certified applicators.
Cancellation of a Service Registration
A Service Registration is automatically cancelled when the location of the Pesticide Service Registration holder’s outlet changes without prior notification to the Director. The holder has to apply for a new service registration for the new location.
In addition, the registration is cancelled when:
- Service does not employ an applicator with the appropriate class of certificate
- Insurance lapses
In these cases, once the service is automatically reinstated once the service employs an appropriate class of applicator and/or validates insurance.
A number of publications have been developed through the department's Pesticide Management Program and through other government programs to ensure appropriate pest management practices and the safe use of pesticides.
