Pesticide use in Alberta is regulated through applicator certification requirements and the issuance of Pesticide Service Registrations to businesses or agencies performing pesticide applications:
- for hire or reward;
- on rights-of-way; on park, boulevard, campground or picnic areas on public land; and
- forest management.
Pesticide Service Registration holders must employ certified pesticide applicators to perform pesticide applications. Any person applying pesticides listed in Schedule 1, 2 or 3 in the following areas must also hold a pesticide applicator certificate:
- in rental dwellings;
- on the grounds of a school, hospital, nursing home or daycare facility;
- or in the common areas (indoor or outdoor) of multiple-family dwellings.
In addition to applicator certification requirements, Pesticide Services must comply with legislation regarding pesticide storage, insurance, and other requirements to ensure public protection. Further information regarding the certification and service registration requirements is available in:
A number of publications have been developed through the department's Pesticide Management Program and through other government programs to ensure appropriate pest management practices and the safe use of pesticides.
