Historical Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory (RVI) Maps

Abstract

This historical map series consists of the Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory (RVI) printed monochrome maps named using the National Topographic System (NTS) map sheet identifier, and in some cases by the Wildlife Management Unit number in Alberta. The series is now available as a fee free download in Adobe PDF and Tif formats under the Open Government Licence – Alberta.

The Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory and associated hardcopy maps were originally created for wildlife habitat evaluation.

The Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory (RVI) mapping series includes:

  • Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory maps
  • Current Vegetation Cover (CVC) for Wildlife Resource Inventory and Assessment
  • Current Cover Types (CCT) for Wildlife Habitat Inventory

The Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory and Current Cover Types for Wildlife Habitat Inventory maps, where available, were created at a scale of 1:100 000 by Wildlife Management Unit.

The Current Vegetation Cover for Wildlife Resource Inventory and Assessment maps were created at a scale of 1:250 000.

The legend for the Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory maps is slightly more detailed than the legend for the Current Cover Types for Wildlife Habitat Inventory maps. This series of reports and hardcopy maps provides a broad vegetation inventory for the Green Area and White Area.

The maps depict:

  • both forestry and agricultural based vegetation cover types including those native and introduced to the province
  • height
  • density

In some cases non-vegetated areas are included in the inventory.

The Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory and its two associated map series were created from Landsat hardcopy images (usually Thematic Mapper bands 3, 5 and 7) from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. These maps have not been updated.

These maps are not available as geo-referenced rectified images or GIS-ready data.

Map Coverage and How to View

View extent of the coverage of this product:

For the Current Vegetation Cover for Wildlife Resource Inventory and Assessment maps, at this scale (1:250 000) 1.0 cm on the map represents 2.5 km on the ground. Each map covers an area of 2.0 degrees longitude by 1.0 degree latitude. Generally these maps are printed on 60.96 x 66.04cm (24" x 26") paper size.

For the Reconnaissance Vegetation Inventory and Current Cover Types for Wildlife Habitat Inventory maps, at this scale (1:100 000) 1.0 cm on the map represents 1.0 km on the ground.

These products can be viewed on a computer, printed or be plotted in part or in whole. To maintain the original map scales when printing the entire product, it must be plotted on a plotter that can use paper that is a minimum width of 91.44cm (36").
