Order of the Bighorn Criteria

Award Themes

The Order of the Bighorn recognizes Albertans whose volunteer efforts:

  • Engage youth in conservation initiatives
  • Enhance local, regional or provincial fish or wildlife populations through direct actions
  • Focus on community engagement and inspire others to act
  • Increase public education and awareness about conservation and the environment
  • Promote habitat conservation or land stewardship ethics

Key Attributes of Nominees and Their Volunteer Efforts

  • Focus on collaboration and building partnerships
  • Demonstrate vision and/or leadership
  • Inspire and influence others
  • Long-term involvement or commitment to volunteer efforts
  • Volunteer actions result in tangible outcomes that benefit native fish, wildlife and habitats

Nomination Guidelines (remember the 5 W’s – who, what, when, where, why!)

  1. Identify the Award Theme (see above)
  2. Include a brief biography of the nominee (1/2 page maximum)
  3. Describe the volunteer activities the individual is being nominated for
  4. Describe the impacts that their activities have had on native fish, wildlife and habitat conservation in Alberta
  5. Describe what makes the nominee’s efforts exceptional and worthy of recognition (i.e., on the ground accomplishments/impacts)
  6. Maximum length of submission is 10 pages, including supporting documentation

Nomination must include

  • Name, address and telephone number of the nominee
  • Name, address and telephone number of the nominator
  • A description of the nominee’s volunteer activities

Additional supporting documents are encouraged (5 pages maximum)

  • Photos illustrating program success or activities
  • Letters of support
  • Identification of partners

Nomination Deadline

  • Nominations will be accepted October 20 through November 24, 2014
  • Nominations may be submitted by completing the attached form
  • Nominations can be submitted via email to: ESRD.OrderoftheBighorn@gov.ab.ca
